Who we are
With more than 4,000 employees across 300 sites, Heidelberg Materials have an extensive production and logistics network across Australia.
We think global and act local - we benefit from global research and development enhanced by national collaboration to offer a comprehensive range of high-quality concrete, aggregates, road base, sand and asphalt products. We produce a wide range of sustainable and recycled construction materials for civil construction and infrastructure projects.
We are driven by excellence and high performance and together we will shape Australia’s construction materials industry building a legacy for generations to come.
We’ve been operating the Glasshouse Quarry for more than 17 years and the quarry has been providing reliable and high quality construction supplies since 1976.
Our 30 onsite staff are locals - some of which have now worked at the quarry for over 30 years. We keep this local focus by source supplies, equipment and services from our local businesses wherever practical.

What we do
We extract rock from the quarry and process it into smaller materials called aggregates. These aggregates are made into many different sizes to meet the needs of our customers.
As well as supplying material to our own concrete plants, we also supply many external customers including the Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Government, small businesses and large private companies.
Our operations are controlled by Council and Government regulations to ensure we operate with the least possible impact to the community and environment. This is in addition to our high company standards for safety, quality and environmental protection.
To ensure we comply with our conditions of operation, we manage a network of environmental monitors in and around the quarry. This sensitive equipment monitors dust, vibrations, air over-pressure (from blasts) and noise.
We report to the Government about our performance and we are proud of our excellent record of compliance. There is no impact to the Glass House mountains from our quarrying operations.
Our quarry operates from Monday-Saturday and we do not work on Sundays or public holidays.

About the resource
Glasshouse Quarry is mapped as a Key Resource Area (KRA) by both the State and regional Council. This recognises the importance of our resources to our communities and industry.
KRA legislation recognises and protects high quality resources, as well as providing appropriate separation distances from other land uses.
Our materials are sourced from underground igneous rock. They are very durable and meet the highest safety, quality and hardness specifications.

The need to source construction materials from local sources
Quarry resources are fixed within the ground and need to be accessed where they formed through geological processes millions of years ago.
Accessing local, affordable construction materials is a critical necessity for our communities and country. Without quarries like ours all across the country, it would be impossible to repair our roads and bridges, build new communities, or develop critical infrastructure such as hospitals, highways and schools.
As quarried materials are heavy and require both transport and labour, materials need to be sourced as close as possible to where they are needed. This ensures affordable materials for construction, and keeps the resources in the region so locals can benefit.
To ensure a continued reliable and affordable supply of quarry materials for the Sunshine Coast construction industry, and to help us continue to deliver vital infrastructure for the region, Heidelberg Materials are submitting a development application (DA) to the Sunshine Coast Council for changes to the existing Glasshouse Quarry operations.
The DA will seek approval to increase the annual extraction volume and the depth of the quarry without increasing the existing approved extraction area footprint.

Proud history
The quarry commenced operation in the 1980s, and we have operated it since 2003. Across its history, the quarry has supplied quarry materials for local roads, bridges, pavement, driveways, housing slabs and much more across the Sunshine Coast.
We also remain a proud, long-term employer in the region with many of our team, suppliers and contractors living in the communities surrounding the quarry and the near region.
